Midland Habitat for Humanity
2008 General Cycle Awardee

Midland Habitat for Humanity received a $50,000 grant under the 2008 general funding cycle of the Texas Foundations Fund. The award was used to construct a single family home for a family earning between 25 to 50 percent of the area median income in Midland.  The grant funded the building materials for the three-bedroom, 1,150 square foot home. The cost of the home was approximately $52,000. Volunteer and sweat equity hours from the new homeowner helped to leverage this grant award.  Financing of the home was provided at no interest to the new homeowner, directly from Habitat.

With this grant, Midland Habitat for Humanity was able to build a home for Ms. Latrina Spears and her three children. Ms. Spears contributed 350 sweat equity hours to the construction of her home and other homes under construction by Habitat. While waiting for her home to be completed, a fire swept through Ms. Spears' apartment leaving it and all of its contents severely damaged and Ms. Spears and her children displaced for 3 months. The Spears family was finally able to move into their Habitat home in May 2009, when it was dedicated as the 87th home constructed by MIdland Habitat for Humanity.
