Earlier this month, we held our 2025 Housing Connection training, an initiative that provides training opportunities for nonprofit housing counselors and affordable housing developers from across Texas. Participants develop their skills in home buyer education, financial literacy, eviction prevention, foreclosure prevention, and affordable housing development to use in their organizations and to assist their communities.
TSAHC contracts with NeighborWorks America to bring high-quality, nationally recognized coursework to Texas. Thanks to generous donations from supporters like the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, Texas Community Bank, and the Mortgage Grant Fund, TSAHC is able to provide the trainings and hotel rooms at no cost to participants. We'd like to give a big thank you to all the sponsors who made this year's training possible!
Housing Connection took place on September 29th through October 3rd. We'd like to extend special recognition to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas for hosting the training in their San Antonio facilities. This year, the following courses were offered:
AH256 Shared Equity Housing: Creative Models to Preserve Affordable Homeownership
Community land trusts, shared equity cooperatives and deed-restricted homes are models where the rights, responsibilities, risks, and rewards of homeownership are shared between the individuals who own and occupy this housing and an organizational entity that stands behind the home long after it is sold. These models ensure that homes remain affordable on a long-term basis.
In this course, participants reviewed the most common models of shared equity homeownership, weighing the pros and cons of each model as a vehicle for promoting individual and community security, prosperity, and mobility.
HO229 Homebuyer Education Methods: Training the Trainer
This pre-purchase homeownership education course is designed to teach participants how to design and deliver impactful homebuyer education in a variety of settings. Participants became familiar with core homebuyer education content and how to tailor educational approaches to targeted audiences.
Moreover, they learned to use the best materials and methods to train homebuyers on how to assess readiness, shop for a home, get a mortgage loan, improve their budget and credit profiles, and maintain their home and finances after purchase
. This course certified attendees in homebuyer education delivery based upon successfully passing a post-course exam.
We're proud to report that we had 46 graduates from this year's training (25 from AH256 and 21 from HO229). These graduates represent 28 organizations across 22 cities across the state.
We offer Housing Connection training every year, selecting courses designed for both housing counselors and nonprofit affordable housing developers.
