We periodically spotlight a staff member or partner to help our readers get to know our mission and industry a little better.
This week, we are spotlighting Erica Mitchell, TSAHC's Development Finance Program Coordinator. As part of the Multifamily and Single Family Development Team, she helps to manage our land bank/land trusts through our Affordable Communities of Texas (ACT) program, our multifamily lending through our Texas Housing Impact Fund (THIF), and our multifamily bonds through our Private Activity Bond (PAB) program.
Below is her interview.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am an Austin native that moved to the Round Rock area in my middle school years. I have moved away several times but Austin is always home. I also attended the University of Houston (Go Coogs).
What do you enjoy most about working at TSAHC?
I love the culture here. Even though we all do something different we all work together to help as many homeowners as we can. I also love how we manage to squeeze in some time to bond and celebrate each other.
What led you to work at TSAHC?
I have been in the real estate industry for over a decade now ranging from property inspections and property preservations to loan servicing. When I learned about the nonprofit sector and saw the wonderful things that TSAHC does for the community I knew I HAD to become a part of this culture.
What is a professional and/or personal accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I have had the privilege of being a part of grand openings and key ceremonies where I get the opportunity to meet the families that we help. Knowing that I had a hand in helping someone achieve their dream of homeownership really helps validate what I do on a day-to-day basis.
What is your favorite piece of advice?
Do the thing that you are most scared to do. There are so many times that we talk ourselves out of something great out of fear of failure. We get hung up on the negative side of the “what ifs” and don’t allow ourselves to consider the positive outcomes as well.
What do you do in your free time?
I am a bit of a gamer and enjoy open-world games such as Legends of Zelda Breath of the Wild/ Tears of the Kingdom. I also love tapping into my creative side and delving into DIY home décor projects. I have recently started working with epoxy and learning all the fun things I can do with it.
If you could live in any book, TV show, or movie which would it be and why?
Going back to the 90s era I would love to be a part of the Banks family from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. That was my favorite show as preteen/teen and I still enjoy catching episodes when I can.
If you could make up a new holiday what would it be?
I wholeheartedly believe that “take your pet to work” day should be a national thing! Who doesn’t want to pass the time away loving on each other’s fur babies!
