Don’t Miss These Upcoming Property Tax Deadlines

The months of April and May include critical property tax deadlines for Texas homeowners. If you currently own real estate in Texas, make sure to add these upcoming dates to your calendar:

April 30th. This is the deadline to apply for property tax exemptions. The most common exemption is the residence homestead exemption, but veterans, people with disabilities, and seniors may be eligible for additional exemptions. Review this previous blog post for a list of full and partial property tax exemptions. If you’ve already applied for your exemption, you don’t need to reapply every year.
May 1st. This is the deadline for county appraisers to mail homeowners their notice of appraised value. Your annual tax bill is based on this appraised value, which is likely to change year over year.
May 15th (or 30 days after receiving your notice of appraised value). This is the deadline for homeowners to file a protest with their local appraisal district. Review this previous blog post for more information about this process.

Having trouble paying your property taxes? Your county has the right to foreclose on your home if you fail to pay your property taxes, and it’s very important to take action if you’re worried about paying them. Many counties will allow you to work out a payment plan, so make sure to contact them to discuss your options.
