We periodically spotlight individuals, organizations, and housing developments that we think will help our readers get to know us, our mission, and industry a little better.

This week we're turning the spotlight to Edna and Bernardo who used our home buyer programs to purchase a home last year and who we featured in our 2022 Annual Report that was released earlier this summer. We invite you to read about Edna and Bernardo and watch the video below that highlights their home buying experience.

Edna and Bernardo spent years dreaming about owning a home. They wanted to own something that felt like theirs — a place they could hang photos and plant flowers without having to ask permission from a landlord. They reached out to REALTOR® Claudia Alvarado who helped them find the perfect four-bedroom home in Dallas for their family.

The home is spacious enough that each of their kids has their own room. It also has an open floor plan and large windows that provide natural light. Their REALTOR® also connected them with Gracie Perez, one of TSAHC’s top mortgage loan officers.

Gracie helped them apply for TSAHC’s Home Sweet Texas Home Loan Program to help with their down payment and closing costs. They qualified for more than $11,000 in down payment assistance on their FHA loan. In addition to being thankful for the down payment assistance, they were surprised at how quick the process was. Here's how they summarized their experience.

“Using TSAHC’s down payment assistance was a super easy process. We submitted all our documents through an app, and we had no idea our closing would happen so quickly. Everyone was very kind and helpful throughout the process, and we’re so excited to be settled in our new home.”

Edna and Bernardo were one of the more than 10,000 Texans we assisted with purchasing a home last year. In 2022, we provided approximately $75 million in assistance and issued more than $2.4 million in mortgage loans thanks to a network of 2,821 participating loan officers and 298 participating REALTORS® who respectively provide and promote our programs statewide.

These statistics are provided in our 2022 Annual Report which was released earlier this summer and is available to read on our website. But beyond the statistics are the stories about the people we serve — like Edna and Bernardo. We appreciate the opportunity to help Texans like them and share their story.
