TSAHC Rental Program Spotlight: Meet Residents Shalinda and Luis

October 20, 2023 | by Taylor Sheridan

We periodically spotlight individuals, organizations, and housing developments that we think will help our readers get to know us, our mission, and industry a little better.

This week we’re turning the spotlight on TSAHC’s Single Family and Multifamily Rental Programs and residents Shalinda and Luis. Their stories were featured in our 2022 Annual Report that was released this past summer. We invite you to read about their experiences below.

Single Family Rental Program - Shalinda's Story

In early 2022, a fire tore through Shalinda's apartment. The fire destroyed her family's possessions and made their home an unsafe environment for their children who have asthma. Shalinda was also recovering from a recent surgery and was desperate for a new home to provide stability for their family. They found a single-family rental home owned by TSAHC on Zillow and knew it was the perfect opportunity for a fresh start.

The rent for the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home that they live in now, is the same as the rent for their old apartment, but now they have a yard and plenty of space for their growing boys. A year after moving in, their 6-year-old twins still sit outside every morning and play hide and seek with each other in the evenings. Shalinda and her family are grateful for the opportunity to raise their family in a beautiful home that is located in a neighborhood with large yards and lots of green space.

Multifamily Rental Program - Luis' Story
Luis was seeking a safe and affordable apartment for himself and his daughters when he found Rollins Martin Apartments in early 2019.

As a native Austinite, he knew how expensive apartments in east Austin could be and was concerned he wouldn’t be able to find any options in his price range. He was excited to find the three-bedroom apartment at Rollins Martin that would allow each of his daughters to have their own rooms.

Luis loves the location of Rollins Martin. His apartment is on the second floor, which provides him with a view. He also has good relationships with his neighbors. The affordable rent at Rollins Martin has also allowed him to save money for emergencies. He doesn’t have to worry about how he will pay his rent every month, and he even has a little left over to donate to charity and help his mother with expenses.

Hear what Luis has to say about living at Rollins Martin Apartment.

TSAHC’s Single Family and Multifamily Rental Programs provide affordable, below-market rental homes to hard working families and individuals in the Austin, San Antonio and Dallas/Fort Worth Metro areas. All 53 units, located across seven different Texas counties, are in high opportunity areas close to neighborhood amenities such as grocery stores, schools, healthcare facilities, and parks. Rent is set at an affordable price with renewal increases capped at 3%.

These statistics are provided in our 2022 Annual Report, which was released this past summer and is available to read on our website. But beyond the statistics are stories about the people we serve – like Luis and Shalinda and Winston. We appreciate the opportunity to help Texans like them and share their stories.
