As we come to the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to take this opportunity to recognize the educators who shape classrooms, communities, and future generations. After a year filled with its own unique challenges, teachers have continued to go far beyond lesson plans by mentoring and inspiring their students every school day.
In recognition of their efforts, we wanted to remind teachers of a TSAHC program that is designed to help them thrive as well.
TSAHC's Homes for Texas Heroes program was created in 2003 specifically to give back to the Texans that serve our community through certain career paths. From the start, this program has provided down payment assistance and mortgage interest tax credits to help educators and other Texas Heroes buy a home in the community they serve.
But it's not just teachers that can benefit from the program. In addition to classroom teachers, this program serves teacher aides, school librarians, school counselors, and school nurses that work full-time in a K-12 public school in Texas.
Our Homes for Texas Heroes program offers multiple options, so Texas Heroes can select the option that works best for their financial situation. Program benefits include:
Heroes using both our DPA and MCC (Mortgage Credit Certificate) programs do need to be first-time home buyers (unless purchasing a home in a Targeted Area); however, heroes will receive the MCC for FREE -- a $500 savings!
If you're interested in the Homes for Texas Heroes program, we'd recommend starting with our free eligibility quiz.
For educators that are still renting, but are interested in boosting their financial health as they prepare for the process of buying a home, our Texas Financial Toolbox site is a great way to locate nonprofit organizations that provide credit and financial counseling.
We'd also recommend looking through our previous blogs on financial education and home buyer education. We've also spent quite some time chatting with experts about finances and the homebuying process on our On the House podcast.
If you're in the educational field and looking for afforable rental housing, we'd recommend reaching out to your school district for resources, like the ones found on this Austin ISD webpage. As we discussed in a previous blog post, some school districts across the state are getting more creative with the benefits they're offering to staff members and are beginning to create affordable housing options of their own.
Lastly, if you work in education but don't qualify for the Homes for Texas Heroes program because your career isn't on our list of eligible professions, know that we also offer down payment assistance and mortgage interest tax credits through our Home Sweet Texas Home program.
