As students and teachers across Texas head back to school, we thought we'd kick the school year off right with an updated list of resources for anyone that works or learns in a classroom.

Resources for Education Professionals

If you're an educator that's interested in settling down in the area where you teach, you might find it helpful to know that TSAHC offers programs to help teachers buy homes.

Our Home for Texas Heroes program provides down payment assistance and mortgage interest tax credits to help teachers and other community heroes buy a home in the community they serve. Teacher aides, school librarians, counselors, and full-time school nurses are also eligible for home buying assistance under this program! If you're interested in this program, we'd recommend starting with our free eligibility quiz.

For educators that are still renting, but are interested in boosting their financial health as they journey towards buying a home, our Texas Financial Toolbox site is a great way to locate nonprofit organizations that provide credit and financial counseling.

If you're in the educational field and looking for afforable rental housing, we'd recommend reaching out to your school district for resources, like the ones found on this Austin ISD webpage. As we discussed in a previous blog post, some school districts across the state are getting more creative with the benefits they're offering to staff members and are beginning to create affordable housing options of their own.

Resources for Current or Former Students

If you're a current student struggling with housing affordability or instability, we'd recommend checking to see if your university has any programs to offer. Many colleges across Texas have started outreach programs for students experiencing housing instability.

Examples of housing resource centers at colleges around Texas include the ones at: Texas A&M University - San Antonio, the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, and Austin Community College District. Additionally, organizations such as Texas Student Housing provide housing scholarships and assistance to high school and community college graduates.

If you're no longer a student but are trying to buy a home while also paying back your student loan debt, we'd recommend checking out this On The House podcast epsiode.

We'd also encourage you to check out our Homes for Texas Heroes program that we mentioned above! If you don't qualify because your career isn't under our list of eligible professions, know that we also offer down payment assistance and mortgage interest tax credits through our Home Sweet Texas Home program.
